Chunkin Up, a pneumatic cannon constructed between 1997 and 1998, was designed for participation in The World Championships of Punkin Chunkin held in DE. It competed exclusively in the Adult Air class from 1999 until the event’s cessation in 2016. This class was established to determine which team could propel an 8-10lb pumpkin the farthest using solely compressed air, with no allowance for wadding or combustion. Chunkin Up achieved its best performance with a shot distance of 3,653 ft and 9th place in the Adult Air class.
The cannon boasts a 500-gallon vessel, subject to hydro testing by Delaware’s Boiler Safety, confirming its operational pressure capability at 250 PSI. For safety reasons, the current operational pressure has been restricted to a range of 5 to 45 PSI. The cannon’s design includes an 8″ ID aluminum barrel connected to the vessel through an 8″ metal breach, facilitating the loading of pumpkins.
